Dickens, Charles John Huffam (1812-1870), probably the best-known and, to many people, the greatest English novelist of the 19th century. A moralist, satirist, and social reformer, Dickens crafted complex plots and striking characters that capture the panorama of English society. Charles Dickens, David Copperfield, 1850. You may be surprised to know the modern-sound phrase, the creeps, "a feeling of fear and revulsion," was coined by Dickens. He may have been influenced by the sense creepy, "chilled and crawling, as with horror or fear," which originated around 1831.

Read the following extract from 'Hard Times' by Charles Dickens, and then Discuss the way he depicts the City. Coketown, to which Messrs. Bounderby and Gradgrind now walked, was a triumph of fact; it had no greater taint of fancy in it than Mrs Gradgrind herself. Charles Dickens can't be beat - for all ages and tastes, hands down one of the world's greatest writers. This volume is well made and attractive. I am extremely happy with my purchase of "Charles Dickens: Five Novels". It came in good time, and the pricing was extremely reasonable for hardcover.

Charles Dickens’s background. Many events from Dickens’s background are echoed in the novella. Charles Dickens was born in 1812, and had a happy childhood until his father was transferred to London for his job. Dickens was left behind with his teacher for a few months before joining the rest of the family. Charles Dickens had three professional careers: novelist, journalist and public Reader. That third career has seldom been given the serious attention it deserved. For the last 12 years of his life he toured Britain and America giving 2-hour readings from his work to audiences of over two thousand.
